Elvis Costello and Police create ‘Spectacle’

Some ambitious DJ out in club land has probably already mashed up songs by Elvis Costello and the Police. Now the two music legends are taking the somewhat tired mash-up premise to a new level Wednesday night, when the Police are guests on the latest episode of “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with . . .” at 9 p.m. on the Sundance Channel.

Costello’s talk show, which premiered last month, does the music-and-chatter thing with an intelligence and depth rarely seen on the boob tube these days. The notion of the host jumping onstage and exchanging vocal harmonies with Sting and teaming up with guitarist Andy Summers for an impromptu jazz session, as we’re promised, is must-see TV. Add in the anticipated live mash-up of Police and Costello classics, and it gets even better.
