HONOLULU - Surfing for the first time is like a first kiss. There is confusion and excitement, and everything happens in a rush.

I have come to sun-drenched Waikiki, stoked for my first surfing experience. I grew up in the 1960s with the surfing anthems of the Beach Boys, siren songs of a sport and a lifestyle that had swept across the Pacific from here to California.
