Gov. Deval Patrick laughed off follow-up questions Monday about his preference in the Boston mayor’s race, declaring himself “officially neutral.”

Patrick, who has had a spotty and at-times productive relationship with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, did not draw challenging City Councilor Michael Flaherty’s enthusiasm during his 2006 race, but two years later he and Flaherty were on the same side early on, behind Barack Obama.

Menino worked for Hillary Clinton. “I think it’s been a great race, strong candidacies, and [am] looking forward to the outcome,” Patrick told reporters. Neither Patrick nor Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray have any events on their official schedules today.
