Senate candidate Stephen Pagliuca says his fellow Democrat and the man he’s trying to replace in the U.S. Senate, the late Edward M. Kennedy, aired “inaccurate” ads against Republican Mitt Romney in 1994.

The ads criticized Pagliuca’s former boss at Bain Capital for layoffs that occurred at Ampad, a Marion, Ind., company acquired by Bain.

Pagliuca told The Associated Press during an interview yesterday that it was inaccurate of Kennedy to focus on one place where jobs were lost rather than the total jobs that had been created by Bain.

Pagliuca said Romney did not respond quickly enough to the criticism.

The attack helped Kennedy fend off the toughest re-election challenge of his nearly 47-year career.

Pagliuca, serving notice to other candidates for Kennedy’s seat, said that he will “fight tooth-and-nail” if he faces similar criticism.

Kennedy died Aug. 25 of brain cancer.

Pagliuca is one of four Democrats seeking the seat. Republican Scott Brown also is seeking the seat.
